GPIT @ WTISD 2012:“Women and Girls in ICT”.

BTRC organized an event on the occasion of “World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD, 2012) on 17 May, 2012, (Thursday) at Radisson Hotel.

This year the theme of the day was – “Women and Girls in ICT”.

The Honorable President of Bangladesh, Mr. Zillur Rahman was present at the event as the Chief Guest. Apart from him, Mr. Raziuddin Ahmed Raju, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Dr. Shirin Sahrmin Chowdhury, MP, State Minster, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Mr. Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications was present as special guest.

The chairman of BTRC requested GPIT to share information related to the number of women engaged in ICT sector and the number of girls studying ICT related subjects. He also asked GPIT to share if we, as community members, have any expectation from BTRC or Government that they can look into. It catered GPIT with an opportunity to showcase the success stories of women in the ICT sector. A photo session was conducted by the GPIT Women’s Council initiated by Executive Committee member, Manizeh Shahrin Sayeed within the premises of GPIT, where the women of GPIT were captured in frames for this occasion.

Rumesa Hussain, Head of Sales, Telecommunication, GPIT, presented the facts and figures about women in GPIT and also the goals and objectives of women in ICT. A video that featured GPIT women was shown at this event which highlighted the fact that women are heavily involved in the complex and challenging aspects of the IT sector and are successfully leading in their respective fields.

It was a great opportunity to showcase GPIT and how women are taking on leadership role in every sector including ICT and hence contributing to the betterment of the society.
